A lot of people find power tools convenient and useful in certain projects. They say that apart from being handy, they are quite practical too. But imagine when your power tool battery defaults on you at an untimely moment or even dies out. Can that be any more frustrating? In cases like these, you are most likely inclined to buy a replacement pronto. But with the current price tags of batteries, who would not have second thoughts buying new one? To stay in budget, you are better off trying an inexpensive alternative - power tool battery reconditioning.
What type of batteries can be reconditioned?

You usually come across automotive batteries being reconditioned. That is because it is the most common type. Take note though that there are batteries of cellular phones and other gadgets like laptops. Actually, the common denominator of these batteries is that all of them are rechargeable.
Power tools are no exception. They are also operated by rechargeable batteries - nickel cadmium (NiCad) batteries, specifically. An outstanding characteristic of rechargeable batteries is that they can be reused until they officially die out. Given that they are recharged and plugged in every time they lose power, they are good to go. Like any other batteries, rechargeable ones are also good until their life span says so. But do not to worry. The life span of NiCad batteries can still be prolonged provided that they are reconditioned every month to keep them good as new.
The Basic Steps
With an electric outlet, a charger and of course you battery, you can easily perform the following basic steps in your garage to recondition your own power tool battery.
To get you started, operate your power tool until it loses power to run on its own. Using a charger and a power outlet, recharge the battery until it is restored to its full operating capacity. Repeat the same process again to make sure that the battery has already regained its normal power. Always bear in mind not to overcharge your battery. This usually becomes the cause of damage in your battery which eventually shortens its life span. Limit the recharging process to at most twice a month.
By now, you observe an enhanced performance and life span of your battery. Note though that even after the recharging process, your battery seems to get worse, consider that it may be just timely to get yourself a new battery.
If you are not challenged enough with this simple process, you can always try out other reconditioning procedures out there. Just take note to check your batteries whether they qualify for reconditioning or not before you actually get started. Neglect the broken ones. They are good as trash anyway.
So before you do anything rash and buy replacement batteries every time they die out, you might want to recondition them first. You might be surprised with how much bucks you can save!
