The Sony NEX 5KB Alpha Compact Camera - A Product Review

The Sony NEX 5KB is a very versatile Digital, aimed at the more serious photographer who is looking for quality linked to spontaneity. The new Sony is a revolutionary piece of equipment for a compact, and comes with interchangeable lenses which increases your photographic options and maintains creative flexibility. This camera is the world's lightest and most compact interchangeable and includes some unique features which combines with some new technology to take it to the forefront when comparing it to other cameras in its class; or so the Sony Publicity department says. Let's take a look for ourselves shall we. The camera comes equipped with the following.

Power Tool Battery Charger

Kit Lens E 18-55mm

Power Tool Battery Charger

Lens Hood

Lens Cap.

Flash.

Case for Flash

Battery Charger

Power Cord

Rechargeable Battery

Shoulder Strap.

USB Cable.

CD-Rom

Users of the Sony Cybershot who want to take the plunge and step up in class will feel at home with the overall feel and controls, and will definitely see the difference in delivered quality. For the rest who don't already own a Sony, you will be amazed at just how small this camera is; the body is barely 24 mm thick and inside there is so much technology. The interchangeable lens compact type cameras is a whole new world apart and on the surface it looks like Sony have surpassed their rivals. But is it as good as it looks?

I must admit I liked and found very useful, the "sweep Panorama" mode, which is a bit noisy but enables you to take snap shots of a Panoramic view, and seamlessly stitch them together. The handheld twilight feature is another great mode that combines a series of pictures into one sharp image.

The movie mode is a vast improvement on the Cybershot, but for the difference in price should be. One drawback though is that it doesn't have any manual exposure controls so there are still problems for Sony here. My opinion on using this type of camera for taking videos though is a definite no. Get yourself a video camera and keep this one for stills.

For me the interface of the camera is a bit small and complicated, and takes time to get used to; If you want to make lots of adjustments then it could turn out to be a bit tedious.

My conclusion? This camera is for someone who want to step up from the average low-cost digital, and start to take professional quality pictures. The picture quality really is in a different league to other compacts. The more experienced photographer will probable give this one a miss for no other reason than it is a Sony. Marks out of 10. A sublime 9.5.

My Motorcycle Won't Start! What Now?

Maintain your Battery and check your charging system!

Power Tool Battery Charger

9 times out of 10 the reason why your bike won't start is usually because of the battery condition or loose connections. A charging system failure is less likely but is still possible.

Power Tool Battery Charger

I will talk about both of them here.

First look at your battery connections. Check for obvious and easiest to fix problems first. A loose connection, poor ground etc. will likely cause intermittent operation of the starting and charging systems. If you find a loose connection and/or corrosion, clean the connections with a wire brush.

Before re-attaching apply a little grease to the contact points. The grease helps to prevent any of the white corrosion residues building up around the battery terminals.

Try and start her up now. You still have a problem? Go down to the mall and buy yourself a small electronic multimeter. (Make sure it has both AC and DC volt functions, as well as a continuity (or OHMS)function. Pull out the battery and set it on a counter. Set your multimeter to DC volts. Measure the Battery voltage by placing the red lead on the positive and the Black on the negative.

The voltage read should be around 12.5 volts (higher is OK) If the voltage is less than this it may indicate a poor battery. Notice I say, "may" here because the bike's charging system might be at fault. In this case the battery will most likely be OK.

Confirm that the electrolyte level in each cell of the battery is good. Add distilled water only to cell's with a low level. (Obviously you cannot add water to a maintenance free battery) Charge the battery overnight with a slow charger only. Motorcycle batteries cannot handle a fast charge. Make sure the charger only charges at a rate of 2 amps or less.

Install the battery and try and start her again. If she still won't go buy a new battery and your problem will likely be fixed. If she starts and runs like a charm, then you have to find out why the battery went dead. You need to check the charging system.

With the engine running, place the multimeter leads on the battery. Rev the engine a little. The system voltage should rise with engine RPM. A voltage of around 13.5 to about 14.5 should be displayed. If the voltage stays constant and/or is slowly decreasing, or if the voltage rises above 14.7 volts the charging system is not functioning.

What do you do now? You have to check two things. The Stator and the Regulator. The stator creates an AC voltage. The regulator changes the AC to DC voltage and also maintains that voltage at the proper level.

The Stator can be checked with the Ohms function on your meter. Locate and remove the plug for the stator on the front of the engine block. You will see two or three pins inside.

Set the meter for low Ohms, and measure the continuity between these pins. 5 Ohms or less is what you are looking for here. Set the meter to the highest setting. With 1 lead attached to a metal part of bike check for continuity to each pin. You meter should read infinite, or no continuity. If these tests check out then your stator is fine. If there is a fault in any of these tests, then see your dealer

The regulator is the easiest of all to check. The regulator is made of solid state electronics and can't be opened. Replace the regulator if everything else on the charging system checks out or if there is an overcharging situation.

On most Harley's you will not know if the charging system is beginning to fail. The evidence shows up when you have dim lights or she just won't start. There are aftermarket accessories that you can install on your bike that will tell you the current state of the charging system.

Save yourself some bucks here!! With a simple multimeter available from any Electronics parts store you can troubleshoot your charging system and check your battery and most likely repair any problems yourself.

Compatible with each and every VersaPak tool, this 3.6-Volt gold battery provides 60 percent more run-time per charge than Black & Decker's silver VersaPak batteries, so it's ready to go when you are. Supplying up to 300 recharges, and boasting the reliable power of nickel cadmium construction, the VP110 can help ensure that your household projects and clean-ups run smoothly. It also boasts "zero memory" technology--so you get the full the benefit of every recharge--and comes with a 2-year home-use warranty.

Christmas Sales Black & Decker VP110 VersaPak Gold 3.6-Volt 2 Amp Hour NiMH Gold Battery Specifications

Black & Decker's VersaPak tools, everything from the ScumBuster to power screwdrivers, are boons to the busy person, saving both time and effort. We know they get a lot of use, so we're glad to see Black & Decker offering single replacement Gold batteries to keep everything running smoothly. The VersaPak line of tools all use this battery, and their main advantage is freedom from "memory," which keeps you from getting a full recharge. But the Gold version lasts half again as long as the standard batteries, meaning longer use and longer battery life in the long run. Black & Decker tells us that these batteries will take 300 charges, but we've heard of them lasting long past that. If you've got VersaPak tools, granted, you don't have a choice of batteries, but even if you did, we'd still recommend these Gold batteries for great power, reliability and long battery life.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

RV Tip: Troubleshooting a 12-volt DC Problem

If you enjoy RVs you already know that a major part of the fun with RVing is getting away from everything. You can just pack up the RV and head out to get some well deserved rest and relaxation without having to deal with the hassles of day-to-day living. These restful, relaxing, memory making RV trips should not be jeopardized by something as simple as a 12-volt electrical problem ruining your vacation.

Power Tool Battery Charger

If you've been RVing for any amount of time you are already aware that a good portion of the devices and accessories in your RV operate off of 12-volt DC power. 12-volt DC or Direct Current is electricity supplied by the RV batteries. DC electricity flows in one direction, from negative to positive. 12-VDC electricity is stored in the RV batteries and supplies power for components, devices and appliances that operate off of 12-volts.

Power Tool Battery Charger

These 12-volt devices include overhead lights, the water pump, vent fans, furnace fan, range hood fan, LP gas leak detectors, stereos, 12-volt TVs and the refrigerator when it's operating in the LP gas mode. When you go camping you rely on these 12-volt items to operate properly, especially if you're dry camping without hook-ups. So what do you do when one of these 12-volt items quit working?

For the sake of an example let's say that we are dry camping and our 12-volt water pump quits working.

I am convinced that just about anybody is capable of troubleshooting a 12-VDC problem, and in many cases repairing the problem without it ruining your camping trip. For starters you will need a couple of simple tools to assist you in troubleshooting your RV's 12-volt electrical system.

1). An inexpensive 12-volt test light.

2). A multi-meter that can test for DC power.

Both of these are available at local auto parts stores. You should also keep some electrical tape, various size wire nuts, 12-volt light bulbs and 12-volt fuses on hand. Check the amperage of the fuses used in the power distribution box and keep an assortment. If you're aware of any inline fuses used on any of the 12-volt devices keep these on hand too.

Now, try to determine the last time the water pump actually worked. Did you leave the RV for a period of time with the pump on? Is there water in the fresh water holding tank? Were you working on or around something else that could have affected the operation of the water pump? Try to think of all possible scenarios. Something might jar your memory resulting in a quick fix to the problem.

If not, the first step is to verify that the coach battery or batteries are charged enough to supply power to these 12-volt items. There are a couple of ways to perform a quick test on the coach batteries. You can use the monitor panel to check the condition of the coach batteries. To get an accurate reading make sure the RV is not plugged into electricity and turn on a couple of overhead lights to place a small load on the battery. Check the reading at the monitor panel. (If you check the reading at the monitor panel when the RV is plugged in to electricity it will give you fully charged reading) A more accurate method is to test the battery with a multi-meter. Set the meter to read 12-VDC and place the negative test probe on the negative battery terminal and the positive test probe on the positive battery terminal. A fully charged battery will read in the range of 12.6 to 12.7 volts. If it reads less than 12-volts it is below a 50% state of charge and will need to be charged.

If the battery is fully charged, the next step is to make sure that any battery disconnect switch for the coach battery is turned on. If the battery disconnect switch is on, verify that other 12-volt devices in the RV are operating properly. If there is 12-volt power to the interior of the RV you need to check the fuse for the water pump in the power distribution center. Determine which fuse is for the water pump (fuses are normally labeled) and find a suitable ground for the 12-volt test light. Test both sides of the fuse for 12-volt power. If the test light only lights on one side of the fuse replace it with the proper size fuse and try the water pump again. If there was power at both sides of the fuse check for 12-volts at the water pump switch. If there is voltage, and the switch is operating properly check the water pump wiring for an inline fuse.

Find a good ground for the 12-volt test light and probe the wire on both sides of the fuse. If there is only power on one side of the fuse replace it with the proper size fuse and test the pump again. If there is power on both sides of the fuse check the water pump wiring connections at the wire nuts. It's possible for connections to come loose due to excessive vibration. Correct any loose connections and try the pump again. If the pump still doesn't work feel the motor to see if it is hot to the touch. If the motor is hot, a thermal breaker may have been triggered. Allow the pump time to cool off and see if it re-sets itself.

If you complete all of these tests and there is 12-volt DC power coming to the water pump motor, and it still doesn't come on, chances are the water pump is bad and it will need to be replaced.

Troubleshooting a 12-volt electrical problem in your RV is not that difficult. Follow the logical path of the device you are troubleshooting and see if you can determine where the problem is. It might be possible for you to save your well deserved vacation, some money and a trip to the RV dealership too.

Note: If you don't feel comfortable performing your own maintenance or troubleshooting the 12-volt electrical system, take your RV to a reputable repair center to have it checked out and repaired

Happy Camping!

Chrysler Pacifica

This is an original entry in its category with no predecessors. The Chrysler Pacifica can seat five to six passengers and the consumer is also left with a choice or all-drive or front-drive. If compared to other wagons, the Pacifica is comparatively upscale, and it also offers an array of comforts wrapped in stylishly chiseled metal. The clever trick to the Pacifica when it comes to its stylish design is the fact that it looks much smaller than it appears to be.

Power Tool Battery Charger

The suspension used in the Chrysler Pacifica is from Mercedes-Benz and this has been praised around the world, especially for the fact that the wagon has a more carried feel and handle. Compared to the earlier versions of this wagon that were heavy and had an unsophisticated transmission, in addition to the fuel consumption, the Pacifica was updated with a V6 engine, a sophisticated 6-speed transmission and overall style.

Power Tool Battery Charger

There are 3 levels available to be offered in the Chrysler Pacifica series. There is the base, Limited and the Touring. Each of these levels is available to the consumer in all and front-drive. The front-drive Pacifica base vehicles are powered by a self-effacing 200-hp V6 engine and connected is a 4-speed transmission that is automatic. All the other Pacificas in the series are powered by a more sophisticated 255-horsepower V6 engine. All Chrysler Pacifica models are able to tow up to 3500 pounds.

The base models provide the owner with a five-passenger-two row seating and they are comfortable, along with particulars as climate control and leveling suspension. There are features in the Touring models that are standard; in addition the option lists are much longer. The Touring models provide comfortable seating for six people by means of two passengers in the third row. Two bucket seats and center console replaced the bench in the second row. To decide at the end of the day when looking for something luxurious pay attention to the Limited. Its features are more styling, it has a long list of luxury, the wheels are bigger, the audio system is top-notch and it includes power liftgate. The liftgate and audio system is optional when looking at the Touring collection.

The Chrysler Pacifica has proved to the world to be a safety record. This is thanks to features like antilock breaks, all-row airbags, knee airbags, stability control and tire monitor. There is a backup camera that is optional when considering the Limited and the Touring models.

The strengths of the Pacifica wagon have received credit for its upscale interior, exceptional comfort, sedan characteristics, and safety scores that are just top-notch.

Consumers that are interested in a Chrysler Pacifica have a few models to choose from, since the Pacifica made it appearance to the world in 2004. At the time, only the Limited and the base were available. The original base had fewer features compared to the base today. In 2005 the Touring was launched, and at first all Pacifica were introduced with the same 250-horsepower V6 engine, however consumers have not experienced any problems with the Pacificas then, and they have certainly nothing to complain about today.
