Golf carts are usually equipped with the same type found in your average car, albeit in a smaller version. These lead-acid batteries can last quite long with proper maintenance and storage. You can ensure that the lifespan of your batteries is optimized by making sure that all of its electrical devices are turned off when the cart is not being used. You should also make sure that it is charged even when the golf cart will not be used.
The best charger to use on these batteries is one that can automatically switch to low charge as soon as the battery gains full charge. You may also use a low-power solar charger to charge your golf cart batteries. Be sure to charge it after each use, especially if you are planning NOT to use the cart for several days. The battery should also be fully charged before you use the golf cart for an extended period of time. Here's how to properly charge the batteries:
Power Tool Battery Charger
Use a crescent wrench to remove the cables from it and then remove the battery itself from the cart. Make a paste from baking soda and water, and use this paste to clean the cables and battery terminals. If your golf cart batteries have removable caps, take them off and then fill the cells with distilled water. Refrain from using tap water as it can actually shorten it's life. Connect the charger's power leads, set it as per manufacturer's instructions and then turn it on. Turn the charger back off as soon as the process is complete and then re-install the battery in the cart unless you charged it in preparation for storage.
When storing golf cart batteries, remember that they don't hold a charge for very long. You have the option of leaving it connected to a charger set on low charge or charging it every two weeks or so. What's important is that you DO NOT allow the battery to go into deep discharge. This can cause sulphur build-up on the battery's lead plates, in which case you'll have no other choice but to conduct battery reconditioning in order to revive your golf cart's batteries. The process of sulfation can also corrode the battery's lead plates, and after about ten deep discharges, you may no longer be able to save your battery, even with reconditioning.
Reconditioning is easy enough to do. Remove the battery from the cart or take it out of storage. Drain the battery and then replace its fluid with a mixture of distilled water and about 15 percent of Epsom salts. Charge the battery as described above. Test the battery after charging and take note that you may have to charge it again in order to bring it to full capacity. While golf cart battery reconditioning can restore your battery's life, it can only work as long as the battery's lead plates are still in working condition. Most importantly, be sure to always use protective gloves and eyewear whenever you are charging or reconditioning a battery.
